Many of us had braces resulting in perfect smiles as we graduated high school. Others were lucky enough to have naturally straight teeth. Some would have benefitted from orthodontia but were unable to afford or chose not to correct their teeth.

Teeth shift over time.

Regardless of which category you fell into as a teen, after decades all smiles will look different than they did when you were younger.

Dental problems are often due to misalignment of the teeth.

Common problems include gum recession, bruxism (grinding teeth), clenching, chipping front teeth, breaking teeth, jaw pain, and gum disease.

Typically people consider their smile in terms of whether they are happy with the way that it looks.

In most cases, the decision to consider any alterations is based solely on cosmetic reasons. Does the crowded look of my teeth bother me? Do I mind the gap between two teeth?

What is the underlying problem that is causing the visual results (crowding, gum recession, etc.) that you are seeing?

Gum Recession: Caused by misaligned teeth and premature tooth contact.  

Over time the amount of gum supporting the teeth recedes to the point where eventually none is left to hold the teeth in place. The only option then is to do a graft which removes tissue from the roof of the mouth and relocates it to the site of the diminished gum. Not only is this procedure costly, but it is painful and the site of the graft doesn’t look normal for at least six months after the procedure.

On the other hand, by realigning the teeth, not only does the recession stop, but in many cases some of the gum tissue will come back.  If a graft is indicated its success will be more predictable because of proper tooth alignment.

Dental grinding: The result of two teeth rubbing against each other unnaturally

Perfectly aligned teeth do not have the tops of the teeth flat against each other and they do not look chipped or worn. Just as the brakes to your car wear down after continued contact your teeth can also wear down.

Correcting a bite is the first step to creating a beautiful and healthy smile. Once teeth are in correct alignment they can be gently reshaped to look more youthful or even.

Permanently correct these problems is by realigning the teeth.

It is nice to know that there are several options available today.

My Boca Raton dental patients often ask, “Why are my teeth stained, yellow or decayed if I  brush my teeth three times a day and whiten my teeth frequently?”

 ’You are what you eat’ is a fact.

The answer can be as simple as your diet.   Modern foods are loaded with sugars and carbohydrates that stick to tooth enamel.  Even if you get regular teeth whitening treatments, if your diet is full of these sugars you are at risk from bacteria that breaks down the enamel that protects your teeth and makes them pearly white.

Food companies have tricked us into a false definition of nutritional value.  

I have yet to find a ‘healthy’ power bar.   Power bars are usually full of sugar and are sticky and gooey.   Anything sticky and gooey is not tooth healthy and is the enemy of white teeth.   Healthy power bars are usually 15 to 25 grams of carbohydrate or sugar which translates into one teaspoon for every 5 grams of sugar.  Therefore, a 20 gram power bar is about four teaspoons of sugar.   Would you open a jar of sugar and eat four teaspoons of it?

On top of all the sugar is the other sticky stuff in that bar which helps sugar adhere to your teeth.

Other typical food items that make it hard to keep your teeth white include:

• Wine
• Soda
• Alcoholic beverages
• Sport drinks

The tannins or compounds found in these food items get inside of your enamel due to the acid environment that the sugars create, and you end up with stained or decayed teeth despite your efforts to do at-home or in-office teeth whitening treatments.

Tooth whitening products cannot keep up with these dietary items.  In order to enhance and preserve the results of teeth whitening I highly recommend removing high sugar content foods from your diet or rinsing with water or brushing after these food or drink items have been used.
