A root canal is a procedure that removes a dead or infected nerve from the tooth. When the nerve inside of a tooth is no longer vital (living), it can cause pain or discomfort. Sometimes it feels like the entire jaw is hurting or all the teeth on that side feel pain. This is called Referred pain.
Treatment is necessary when the soft tissue inside the root canal, becomes inflamed or infected. The inflammation or infection can have a variety of causes. In addition, an injury to a tooth may cause damage even if the tooth has no visible chipping or cracking. If the inflammation or infection is left untreated, it can cause pain or lead to an abscess.
In some cases, there does not have any pain associated with any damage. In most cases, pain, prolonged sensitivity to heat or cold, tenderness to touch and chewing, discoloration, and swelling, tenderness in nearby bone and gum tissues.
After the tooth has been treated with a root canal, the tooth will require a post and crown to protect the tooth from additional damage.
